Teaching Statement
My teaching philosophy centers on genuine care for students as both learners and individuals. I strive to know learners beyond the classroom—learning about their interests, backgrounds, and goals—because recognizing their complexity builds trust and connection. I use humor and lighthearted moments to create an inviting, enjoyable atmosphere where students feel comfortable engaging and expressing themselves. By being approachable and willing to laugh together, I hope students see that learning can be both meaningful and fun.
Research Statement
My research examines the social dimensions of leisure, with a focus on nontraditional recreational communities such as ultimate frisbee, roller derby, and ultramarathon running. I explore the social forces that draw individuals to these activities and the interpersonal dynamics that sustain participation over time. Guided by the understanding that humans have an inherent desire for connection, my work investigates how these leisure communities foster a sense of belonging, social support, and enhanced quality of life. By studying these contexts, I aim to advance understanding of how leisure enriches well-being and strengthens social relationships in adulthood.
