INTRODUCTION

MSG Matney is a native of Covington, VA. He attended Covington High School and graduated in 2002. MSG Matney is married to Amy Matney of Covington, VA. They currently reside in the Fort Hood, TX area and have two children, son Jayden (17) and son Jackson (13).

MSG Matney entered the U.S. Army in March of 2006; completed One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Benning, GA and was awarded the MOS of 11B Infantry in July 2006. MSG Matney has served in many positions and leadership roles ranging from all positions on an Infantry team, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Gunner, M240b Machine Gunner, Rifle Team Leader, Rifle Squad Leader, Section Leader, Weapons Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, MLC Instructor, Company First Sergeant, and Senior Military Science Instructor for the Fighting Illini Battalion ROTC Program. He has also served as a Drill Sergeant, Assistant Operations Sergeant (Battalion), Unit Victim Advocate, and Observer/ Coach and Trainer (OC/T) at the platoon and company levels.

MSG Matney’s assignments include: A Company of 2-6 Infantry Regiment in Baumholder, Germany; A Company of 1-8 Infantry Regiment at Fort Carson, CO; D Company of 2-19 Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning, GA; D Company of 1-32 Infantry Regiment, C Company of 1-32 Infantry Regiment, and HQ Company of 1-32 Infantry Company at Fort Drum, NY; Warhog Critter Team of 7th ATC in Hohenfels, Germany; Master Leader Course Facilitator of USASMA in Fort Cavazos, TX; B Company of 2-5 Cavalry Regiment in Fort Cavazos, TX; and currently serves at both University of Illinois - Urbana and Champaign/杏吧原创ROTC. 

MSG Matney’s Awards and Decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal (3) oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal (7) oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal (6) oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal (6) knots, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (3CS), Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Serve Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon (Numeral 5), National Defense Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge, Airborne Badge, Air Assault Badge.

MSG Matney’s Military and Civilian Education includes: an Associate degree in general studies from Maryland University College University; Airborne School, Air Assault School, Combative Level 1-2, Sexual Harassment and Assault Response Program Leader Course, Observer Controller Academy, Drill Sergeant School, Basic Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Master Leader Course, and the Common Faculty Development Instructor Course. He is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in business management from Maryland University College Global University.
