INTRODUCTION
Mr. Michael Alvis is a retired Army Sergeant Major with 35 years of service. Originally from Kell, Illinois, he enlisted in the Army in 1987. After serving for 4 years on active duty in Korea and Fort Riley, Kansas, he transitioned to the Illinois National Guard in 1993. Mr. Alvis’s assignments include Military Police Team Leader, 1st MP Company, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kansas. Infantry Team Leader, 1st Battalion 131st Infantry, ILARNG, Heavy Anti-Armor Infantry Squad Leader, Heavy Anti-Armor Infantry Section Leader, Reconnaissance Squad Leader, Reconnaissance Platoon Sergeant, and Infantry Company First Sergeant, 2nd Battalion 130th Infantry, ILARNG. Senior Enlisted Instructor (OCS), and Combat Arms Training Branch Chief, 129th Regional Training Institute, ILARNG. Squadron Operations NCO, 2nd Squadron 106th Cavalry, ILARNG and Chief Operations NCO, 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, ILARNG.
Mr. Alvis’s deployments include Operation Fuertes Caminos, Bolivia, 1990, Operation Desert Storm, Iraq, 1991, Operation Enduring Freedom, Germany, 2002, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Iraq, 2005-2006, Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan, 2010 and Joint Multinational Training Group, Ukraine, 2020-2021.
Mr. Alvis’s military education includes Primary Leadership Development Course, Infantry Basic NCO Course, Infantry Advanced NCO Course, Heavy Anti-Armor Infantryman (11H) Course, Small Arms Master Gunner Course, Army Basic Instructor Course, TAC Qualification Course, Foreign Security Forces Combat Advisor Course, Airborne School, Cavalry Leaders Course and the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy.
Mr. Alvis’s awards and decorations include; the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), Good Conduct Medal , National Defense Service Medal, GWOT Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (4), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Polish Army Medal (Bronze), Ukrainian Armed Forces Medal, Basic Airborne Wings, Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the German Army Proficiency Badge (Bronze).
Mr. Alvis lives in Champaign, Illinois with his wife Elizabeth, where he retired after twenty-five years as a Police Officer for the Champaign Police Department. After retirement, he worked as a Firearms and Tactics instructor for the University of Illinois Police Training Institute before accepting his current position as an Army ROTC Military Science Instructor at Eastern Illinois University. He has three children, Chance, Hannah, Cole, one grandson, Brewer, and two granddaughters, Madalyn and Alexis.
