How to Refer a Student
- Start with a private conversation. Express genuine concern and describe specific behaviors you’ve noticed (e.g., isolation, declining grades, mood changes).
- Normalize counseling. Emphasize that our services are free, confidential, and voluntary. Counseling is a step toward self-care, not a sign of weakness.
- Offer support. Help the student call (217-581-3413) or visit the clinic to make an appointment. If needed, you can walk with them to our office in the Human Services Building.
- Respect their autonomy. Unless it’s an emergency, the choice to seek counseling should remain with the student.
- Follow up. Check back in the student, encouraging continued support.
If you're unsure how to help, call us for a confidential consultation. We’re here to support both you and the student.
What you can say to a student you would like to refer to the Counseling Clinic:
- “It sounds like you are dealing with a tremendous amount. The counseling center can really help with these concerns.”
- “I appreciate that you feel comfortable talking to me about important things, however, the counseling center staff is trained for these concerns. Let’s call their office and see what appointments are available.”
- “I can give you a list of some resources that may be helpful to you and the counseling center would be a great resource to help you process some of these concerns you have.”
- “Unfortunately, I’m not trained/do not have the skills to guide you, but my friends at the counseling center do/are.”
- “The Counseling Center may also have resources I do not have access to.”
