Pre-Arrival Information
Welcome to Eastern Illinois University! To help you prepare for a smooth transition, we’ve created a comprehensive pre-arrival checklist. Complete these steps before your departure to ensure a confident and successful start to your EIU journey.
Immigration & Visa
- Pay the and print your confirmation.
- Schedule and attend your F-1 or J-1 visa interview.
- Verify all information on your Form I-20 or DS-2019 is accurate.
- Pack and carry required immigration documents:
- Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
- Visa (F-1 or J-1)
- Form I-20 or DS-2019
- SEVIS fee receipt
- EIU admission letter
- Financial support documents (originals)
Travel Planning
- Book your flight to Chicago ORD. Book an from Chicago, IL to Mattoon, IL Arrange transportation from Chicago ORD to Amtrak station.
- Complete the Arrival Form and arrange Amtrak pickup on the IPUR website so we know when to expect you (free service may be offered during orientation dates—check with OISS/IPUR).
- Review to avoid issues at the port of entry.
- Label luggage clearly and pack a change of clothes and important documents in your carry-on.
Housing & Meals
- Confirm your on-campus housing assignment or off-campus arrangements.
- If arriving early, apply for early move-in with University Housing.
- Understand meal plan options or local dining alternatives.
- Pack bed linens, toiletries, or buy them after arrival (linens available via campus for temporary accommodation stays).
Health & Wellness
- Submit your Immunization Records to the Health & Counseling Services office.
- Purchase or enroll in U.S.-based health insurance that meets EIU’s coverage requirements.
- Schedule any necessary medical appointments or prescriptions before arrival.
- Bring a copy of your medical history and prescriptions (with English translation).
Technology & Campus Resources
- Activate your EIU email account.
- Learn about campus Wi-Fi, library access, and tech support.
- Consider bringing a power adapter for your electronic devices (U.S. voltage is 120V).
Money & Banking
- Bring enough U.S. currency for the first 2–3 weeks (~$300–$500 recommended).
- Learn about opening a bank account after arrival.
- Set up a credit/debit card that works internationally.
- Review your tuition and fee payment deadlines and plan accordingly.
Cultural & Social Preparation
- Join the International Panther Welcome group chat (invitation sent after arrival form is submitted).
- Sign up for Global Ambassador connections—get matched with a student mentor.
- Follow @EIU_IPUR on Instagram or Facebook for orientation updates and cultural tips.
- Research Charleston, Illinois (weather, local culture, transportation options).
- Pack traditional clothing or items you might want for cultural events or presentations!
Orientation & Programming
- Mark your calendar for International Student Orientation (required)—dates listed on the IPUR homepage.
- RSVP for pre-arrival webinars and IPUR-hosted Zoom Q&A sessions.
- Check your email regularly for updates on:
- Grocery shuttle service to Champaign
- Campus tour sign-up
- SIM card or phone plan assistance
- Upcoming events like Welcome Week, Global Culture Night, etc.
